Dr. Jarrod Cornehl, an amazing dentist if you need one, referred me to Dr. Rayher to get a consultation on my wisdom teeth. I was pretty scared about the surgery as the doctor warned me of all the risks rather extensively. He was just doing his job, but I definitely was very nervous and hesitant about the surgery after the consultation. The office gave me a few handouts with instructions on bleeding control, diet, cleaning, etc and prescriptions for painkillers so I could get everything I needed in advance of the surgery. Everyone at Dr. Rayher's office is very thoughtful and thorough. This was my first real surgery so I was pretty nervous and anxious. I had three impacted wisdom teeth that I was getting extracted. I have a paralyzing fear of dentists where I tense up, get cold sweats, and grip the armrests the second I'm in the chair. Thankfully Dr. Rayher is really friendly and calming and put me at ease. They put me under for the surgery, making it such an easy process. I fell asleep within a few minutes and by the time I woke up, we were all done! The surgery went well, and Dr. Rayher called me a few hours after surgery to check on me. That was a nice touch! When I went in a few days later for a post-op checkup, Dr. Rayher was very sympathetic about the pain and kept reminding me that he's available 24/7 if I have any problems and need to talk to him. He is a really caring doctor and knows how to calm his nervous patients. =) Thanks Dr. Rayher!

I was referred to Dr. Rayher by Dr. Preston Brown (who I would HIGHLY reccomend) . I was getting an impant replaced and when it proved to be a little more tricky than Dr. Brown and I originally thought Dr. Rayher took me in and provided me with the best care imaginable. He was extremely knowledgeable, took time to explain every step and made sure I was comfortable before proceeding. His staff was also very friendly and accomdating. I would highly reccommend to all my close family and friends and of course, my Yelp family.

I went to Dr. Rayher for a dental implant - my first one. When he spent the time to explain exactly what was involved, in a very relaxed way, I gained a lot of confidence he knew what he was doing and would do it well. I expected a difficult procedure and pain for many days. Instead the procedure was quicker than I thought it would be and I never had any pain either during or after the procedure (bringing my iPod to listen to during the procedure was a great idea). I am convinced Dr. Rayher knows how to perform this surgery in a way that minimizes pain during the healing process. I recommend Dr. Rayher with no reservations.

There are already a ton of amazing reviews here so I am going to keep mines plain and simple. So I needed to get two of my wisdom teeth extracted and honestly I was not too excited because my last experience with another doctor was awful. But Man!!!! Dr. Rayher work is amazing, he makes wish he was the one that took all my wisdom teeth out. I am just so blessed that this time around I have no complaints, and had an amazing doctor to do the procedure. I swear!!! I love love love love Rayher for everything he did. He is sweet, caring and knows what he is doing. I will always recommend him!!! I promise you, you will not regret going to Dr. Rayher.

I had 4 wisdom teeth extracted yesterday morning, and as of this evening, I literally have not been in ANY pain. None. Just a bit stiff in the jaw and a minor headache. Haven't had to take the heavy drugs (oxycodone) and am just amazing. Like most people, I'm terrified of dentistry. I'd rather suffer the pain of a toothache than get dental work done. But, I figured at 40 years old, it was time for me to face reality. Dr. Rayher must be a perfectionist, and is also so kind and reassuring. His staff are wonderful too. I went in giving up all of my fears and just made my mind up to let them do what they do best, and not to worry a bit. When they took my blood pressure, the dental assistant said, "You're not nervous, are you?" They can tell. I woke up out of a dream of being in Paris, which is what I was talking to them about before I went under. Dr. Rayher called me the afternoon after the extraction and made sure I understood how to get ahold of him after hours if needed. That's exceptional care! The best part is, my 16 year old daughter got to witness an amazing oral surgery outcome, and won't be terrified if she needs to have hers removed. THANK YOU!!!

I just had a wisdom tooth removed - yes, just one, but that was all I had. So, after reading all manner of reviews, I decided to go to Dr. J. Reed Rayher, DDS, MD. Dr. Rayher's offices are tastefully decorated like a Victorian Salon, rather than the usual anonymous clinical style of most doctors' offices. I found that it put me at ease instantly. That is not to say that Dr. Rayher's grasp of technology and clinical equipment are behind the times - everything is new and very high-tech. Dr. Rayher's staff are all very friendly, kind, helpful, efficient, and professional. It was a pleasure dealing with them, and they made everything proceed smoothly. It began with a consult and an x-ray. Dr. Rayher is a good looking guy, with a very gentle and friendly nature. He smiles often, in a casual reassuring way, just because he is a genuinely good person who genuinely likes people. He is very easy to be around, like someone you have known for a long time. This belies his native brilliance, extensive training, and mastery of multiple complex medical and surgical disciplines. Dr Rayher thought I should have the tooth removed eventually since it was causing irritation, and might eventually impact my molar, but that it was not an immediate problem. I decided to go ahead and just have the tooth removed in order to be rid of it. Because I didn't think I could handle having the procedure with just local anesthesia, I opted for general. I take a medication (MAOI) that has 500+ known drug interactions, many of them fatal, especially an aesthetics and narcotics. Dr. Rayher worked with my physician to find an an aesthetic regimen that would be safe and effective for me. So, the day came. At first I was just sitting in the treatment chair, with Dr. Rayher and his staff bustling around, and then I fell asleep for a moment. When I awoke, it was all over. I had a very small amount of pain, if you can call it that - more like a distant ache and I had a little bit of gauze in my mouth. I felt a little out of it from the an aesthetics, but I could walk fine. Since I had forgotten to arrange for someone to pick me up & take me home, Dr. Rayher's staff called medical transportation for me (a car, not an ambulance). They sent me home with an extensive kit of post-surgery care items, including instructions, cold packs, and a follow-up visit card. That night, Dr. Rayher gave me a call to see how I was doing. I slept in quite late the next day. Over the next few days I dutifully changed the gauze, stuck with a fluid diet. Since there was no appreciable pain I didn't take any analgesics. On my follow-up visit, Dr. Rayher said that everything was pink and healthy and healing well, and to contact him if there were any problems in the future. An A+ and a gold star to Dr. Rayher and his staff!

Lovely and helpful staff! Had my wisdom teeth removed in november 13, had problems and came back to Dr. Rayher six months later. Had another surgery for which I didnt get charged at all. Dr. Rayher even called me in the evening after the surgery to see if everything was okay. Everytime I go there I feel more than comfortable, especially because of the nice staff!

Dr. Rayher and his people KICK ASS. I have been avoiding my wisdom teeth extraction for nearly a decade, and Dr. Rayher was the only person I have met that I was comfortable with doing this procedure. (I have seen three other oral surgeons for a consultation.) He is warm, and kind, and patient. He talked me through all my options, listened to my questions, and was sympathetic to my fears. There's so many doctors that have that "quit your whining!" attitude and I hate that. Dr. Rayher is NOT like that at all. So I had my surgery (all four wisdom teeth removed and a bone graft) two days ago. I had to come in again today as my bleeding hadn't stopped and had actually started internally bleeding. He and his assistants treated me with so much care, I am overjoyed to be writing this review. How can so much warmth and kindness be in one office? I'm sincerely astounded. One of the assistants even held my hand through the whole second procedure. The people of Dr. Rayher's office made this incredibly terrifying experience for me nothing but wonderful. It's not easy and I'm still scared kinda, but they made it so much better. I seriously love them.

Dr. Rayher is one of the kindest doctors I've ever met. He has bedside manner to the fullest. It can be daunting to go in with scary mouthy issues, but rest assured you're in the best of hands and spirits with him. His front desk is just as kind. I highly recommend.

Dr. Rayher is a top notch oral surgeon with an excellent team helping him. One of my teeth near the front of my mouth broke in half (pretty traumatic) and I had to get a dental implant and a crown. Dr. Rayher performed the surgery and not only explained things patiently (even drawing pictures) but was meticulous and highly skillful in ensuring the end result was perfect. The entire process was months long, but Dr. Rayher convinced me that taking a more conservative approach would yield a better result. I was very happy with the result (he also worked well with my prosthodontist Dr. Ann Wei) and I would definitely trust Dr. Rayher if I ever needed such dental surgery again. His entire team (front desk- Zena, Maria, and all the dental assistants) were extremely friendly, professional, and warm. Dr. Rayher also showed great empathy and kindness. Getting a tooth extracted and then having a bone graft and gum graft is no picnic, but thanks to the fantastic Dr. Rayher and his awesome team the experience was actually pleasant.

If there were 10 stars, double thumbs up, clapping, and cartwheels ratings, it still might not be enough to say how wonderful this oral surgeon and his staff are! My first experience with him, extracting an old root canal/crown which had bit the dust, was so wonderful that I finally had the trust and courage to get my wisdom teeth out. I'd been putting that off forever, but I felt so much trust and confidence in Dr. Rayher from my earlier experience that I knew it was time. I'm heading home now from my procedure and feeling wonderful. The procedure itself went by pretty quickly, and though I'd prepared myself to have to tough out some really exquisite pain, I was so relaxed that I almost fell asleep in the chair while the procedure was going on (I had chosen not to have any sedation, just local anesthesia). I really cannot say enough good things about Dr. Rayher and his wonderful staff. If you need an oral surgeon, choose Dr. Rayher!!

Wow there are so many great words to describe the team at Dr. Rayher's. I would give ten stars if I could. I got my wisdom teeth extracted today and walking in I was so scared but then when the procedure started all my nerves were gone. I had full trust in them and the process was super quick and easy. I'd like to thank the whole office and the nurses and most especially Mandy and Dr. Rayher. The first time walking in the lady at the front desk was extremely helpful. Then I had my consultation and before that I had watched the video about getting my wisdom teeth extracted. Knowing the risks and the good things, this is what made me worried. But Dr. Rayher explained the whole process and made it easy to understand. If you're looking for a great surgeon, I would highly recommend Dr. Rayher!

I was referred to Union Square Oral Surgery to have 3 wisdom teeth removed, and I am genuinely relieved that I went with Dr. Rayher. Dr. Rayher was intelligent, professional and friendly - all traits that his clinic reflected. Dr. Rayher took the time to listen to me and my concerns, even though they were not entirely related to getting my wisdom teeth out. He was easy going and candid about how things were going to be done, and what I could expect. As other reviews have mentioned, he called me the night of the surgery to see how I was. I cannot overstate how much I recommend Dr. John Reed Rayher for oral surgery. 10/10. His assistant Felicia put me at ease and walked me through the set-up at both the consultation and the procedure. She was knowledgeable, thorough, and very friendly. A great person. Maria at the front desk was both patient and polite. I feel like she works overtime to take care of her patients, and was very accommodating when SF traffic caused me to run a bit late. The keyword here is service - Dr. Rayher's team goes out of it's way to make you feel comfortable. There is no better decision I could have made.

Adding to all the other super reviews I just want to say how excellent the service I received was. Rayher and his whole team are so kind professional and considerate and he is a brilliant surgeon. I am sure nobody skips into oral surgery with a light heart... however the first rate service here really does make it all so much more bearable. thank you so much Dr Rayher and all your superb team Helen

I'm very anxious about dental procedures and waited for about 20 years after I was first told (in high school) that I needed to have my wisdom teeth taken out before taking care of them. I came in for my consultation about 3 weeks ago and really felt at ease with Dr. Rayher's practice. The office doesn't not look at all like an oral surgeon's office. It had the feel of charming old house. The equipment was very modern but hidden out of the way within wood cabinets, etc... The staff, including Liz, the office manager, Dr. Rayher, and Dr. Rayher's two dental assistants were extremely friendly and sympathetic to my fears. There are many options to chose from, including local anesthesia, nitrous, and IV sedation. They provide anti-anxiety pills to calm your nerves the night before and the morning of surgery. After having such a positive experience with the initial visit, I decided to go ahead and have all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted, including 2 impacted teeth. My procedure was 6 days ago, and I am absolutely amazed at how well it went! Dr. Rayher and the staff made me feel so at ease before the procedure. I received IV sedation and woke up feeling no worse than having awoken from a regular night's sleep! I am absolutely amazed that there was NO pain, and the jaw soreness and tightness that everyone warned me about was minimal. I used ice packs religiously after the surgery (do it when the local anesthesia is still in effect so it's not as uncomfortable) and took ibuprofen around the clock. Other than that, I've not needed any of the narcotics prescribed. In reading the other reviews, it doesn't sound like my experience is unique. Most of my friends have had some degree of pain and soreness after their wisdom teeth extraction, so Dr. Rayher must be doing something right. Finally, I highly recommend Dr. Rayher's practice for people who are anxious about dental procedures. The office environment and wonderful staff really make this process easy!

I've always operated on the school of thought that if my teeth weren't bothering me, I didn't have to worry about them. Also, I'm a huge weenie when it comes to pain. When I found out, to my dismay, that I should probably get my wisdom teeth removed (it was a gentle but serious suggestion by my dentist), I decided I needed to find someone who wouldn't scare the bejeezus out of me - aka good Yelp reviews. I mean, who trusts a 1-star-average person to cut open their gums and dig around in their mouth? So I found Dr. Rayher, and again, to my dismay, he suggested that I get all 4 wisdom teeth out. Three were actually "must removes," while the 4th was like, just sort of hanging out and not really doing anything, but since I had to go under to get the rest out, might as well get this one out as well. (Also, when I found out how much it cost, even with insurance, I went into a serious depression and my husband ended up making me a surprise dinner because he knows the only way to make me truly happy - and the key to my heart - is food) I must admit that I was REALLY intimidated when I had to sit through a video explaining the process and risks. Then I was even more intimidated when I received a handout explaining said process and risks in more detail. After my wisdom teeth were out, Dr. Rayher told me that I was doing a great job of taking care of my mouth. WELL YEAH, because your staff did a GREAT JOB of scaring me into making sure EVERYTHING IS CLEAN. The actual process was, well, I was asleep for all of it, which was expected. However, the part I was most pleased about was the fact that I experienced virtually no pain afterwards, and I didn't even need any pain meds. Everything healed quickly, so I was back to eating regular foods within a few short weeks. (I should probably also give a shoutout to my husband, because he played nurse and changed out all my bloody gauze the first night, then made me a TUB of mashed potatoes a few days later since I couldn't chew anything. He also put up with a temper tantrum that I threw because I was sick of eating ice cream and mushy foods) He's super nice and helpful, and so are his assistants and the office staff. Seriously cannot recommend Dr. Rayher enough if you need any gross/scary procedures done.

Dr. Rayher and his staff are amazing. I had a tooth extraction with no swelling or pain whatsoever. I highly recommend Dr. Rayher for oral surgery. The consistent and outstanding reviews are well deserved.

I got referred to Dr. Rayher in order to get 4 teeth removed (not wisdom teeth). My experience so far: Initially I was very concerned about the procedure (more specifically, pain), but I felt no pain at all: first I got laughing gas, then some some local anesthesia shots. No pain during the procedure or afterwards, no pain at all. I didn't even need the pain medication. I only have some bleeding (which is expected when teeth is removed), and no pain. Later that day, in the evening, I got a call from Dr. Rayher making sure everything went fine, and also answered some questions I had. I think teeth extractions cannot get any better than this. Everyone in the staff are very friendly and professional. If I could grow those teeth back and get them removed again I would do it here.

As someone who has never had a surgical procedure and was borderlining on punching my dentist in the mouth if they so much as brought up wisdom teeth, I was terrified when the fateful day came that my sweet little evolutionary mishaps would need to be removed from my skull. Dr. Rayher and his staff were nothing short of a glistening miracle. They were responsive, patient, and understanding (not to mention funny!) which is a feat considering how annoyingly neurotic I tend to be in any medical setting. They loaded me up with all necessary pain and anxiety medications beforehand (even went the extra distance to ensure I got liquid forms for everything since I'm terrible with pills) and sent me on my way with D-Day firmly set in place. All four of my wisdom teeth were taken out. The procedure itself was *awesome*. Beyond a breeze. (Maybe the valium and nitrous oxide helped that a little) No complications and hardly any pain afterwards (Didn't even have to take the RX painkillers during the day!) The instructions given to me by Dr. Rayher for pre-op and post-op were so comprehensive that I felt secure over the weekend, though I was given a phone number I could call anytime just in case anything went wrong. It's about a month later, I'm healing wonderfully and laughing at a time when I was scared of having my teeth yanked. Between Dr. Rayher (and Dr. Preston Brown, who referred me to him AND sent me an email after I had it done congratulating me, seriously, who does that!!) there is nothing left to fear when it comes to all that is dental. You are in the best hands!

Dr. Rayher is an excellent oral surgeon and I would suspect that he is also a good person. I had a small wisdom tooth removed but I was still anxious. Not only did he do an excellent job during the procedure (the tooth was out before I knew it!) but he did a wonderful job putting me at ease before the procedure itself, both during my consultation and the day of. He asked me questions about my anxiety level and then customized his responses and treatment plan to meet my needs. Not that I am an expert at this but I felt his technique was top notch (tooth was out so fast I didn't even realize it) and most importantly he has an excellent "bedside manner". He really seems to care about every patient that comes into his practice. His staff are also very kind. My opinion is to always book your appointments first thing in the morning for an easy in-and-out experience

Dr. Rayher is really an excellent oral surgeon. I have been delaying my two wisdom teeth extraction for many years, because another dentist scared me that I would lose my molars if I do the surgery. Finally, after delaying it for 10 years, last year I decided to have them extracted because I needed to start an orthodontic treatment. Dr. Rayher said that yes, there is a chance that I could lose my molars because they were impacted (two molars), but if I wait the chance will just increase - this is so true and something that I needed to hear. Then, it was easy to make peace with my decision. The surgery went great, it was over in less than an hour and it was completely painless (I only took local anesthesia). I'm happy to say that even now, a year after my wisdom teeth extraction surgery, I still have all my molars :-). I went back again to Dr. Rayher's to get another tooth extracted to make space for other teeth during my braces. I was nervous because I was extracting a completely healthy tooth, but Dr. Rayher reassured me that otherwise the other teeth will suffer and that this is the best solution. That extraction was 10 minutes, it was so fast and painless. Hopefully I won't need to extract any more teeth or get implants, but if I do, I will definitely go back to Dr. Rayher's office.

We've had our fair share of tooth extractions in my family so I am a knowledgeable oral surgery frequent flyer. Dr. Rayher is bright, trained at UCSF, and he provided a thoughtful, individualized consultation, answering our questions patiently and kindly. His surgical technique was careful and gentle, the best of the 3 oral surgeons we have seen, and this led to MUCH LESS PAIN after the procedure. We chose local anesthesia with nitrous and felt well afterward, tho one of the 2 of us got sick during the procedure. She might have done better with the IV sedation option, which was also offered. He called to check in that night, and was very supportive. Neither of us needed narcotics after the surgery, since naprosyn and Tylenol (staggered, around the clock) we're enough. The office staff and nursing staff are lovely and caring. The office is beautiful, a block from Union Square, where we parked underground, thereby enjoying the Tout Sweet visit to Macy's after the preop and postop visits for a French macaroon and tea!

Dr Rayher is an amazing oral surgeon. He's also extremely personable, informative, kind, and takes good care of his patients. If you're looking for someone to help extract your wisdom teeth, look no further. This is where you need to go. He makes teeth extraction seem like art! I was a teensy bit worried about getting my wisdom teeth out, especially after hearing about all the potential risks during the first consultation. Not to mention all the horror stories my friends told me. But the procedure was easy and remarkably fast. I was semi-conscious and relaxed (partly napping) through the operation, and my mouth was injected with local anesthesia. I heard a bzz bzz bzz on the first tooth, and then felt a few push push pushes, and before I knew it, we were onto the next tooth. All of them were out within half an hour! And if you're wondering about his staff; they are most friendly and kind. Both on the phone and in person. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I love seeing Dr Rayher, he really knows what he's doing & I feel that he treats his patients with respect. He's also very professional!

Dr. Plack (BEST DENTIST EVER) referred me to Dr. Rayher for a wisdom tooth extraction. I went there for a consultation where they took x-rays, showed me an informational video and the Dr. explained what he saw in the x-rays and answered all the questions that I had. Everyone is friendly and they did a great job. p.s. the decor of the office is amazing.. it's very "historic" although he uses a lot of new technology!
